Father-daughter team wins JSBC: Carl Graham admits to be a "wee-bit" prejudice when it comes to his feelings on the fishing abilities of his daughter, Carla Beard. After all, Graham is one of the Mid-South's most well-known fishermen through his success as a tournament angler, numerous appearances on television and the Hammer Fishing Rods he makes and sells. He's also spent a lot of time over the years fishing with all three of his children. That fishing knowledge paid off on May 28 when Graham and Carla placed first in the 34th St. Jude Bass Classic at Sardis Lake. Graham and Beard combined to catch four bass weighing 15.37 pounds, including the tourney's big bass at 7.02 pounds. Along with the big bass pot of $6,260, Graham and Beard won $2,000 with additional $9,000 in prizes. Runner-up honors went to Scott Webb of Ecru, and Marvin Nickels of Blue Springs, with 4 fish weighing 13.65 pounds. Stan Weaver of Germantown and Jim Jacobi of Dyersburg, Tenn., were third at 13.25, followed by Gene and his son, McKay, of Lake Comorant, at 11.69 and Pete Brummett of Taylor, and Jason Bumgardner of Water Valley, at 8.35. The tournament attracted 329 two-person teams and generated about $85,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, according to Dennis Morlok of Nesbit, of ALSAC/St. Jude Sports Marketing. The money pushed the JSBC over the $2 million mark in money raised for St. Jude. Ronnie Anderson of Memphis won the Grand Attendance prize (a Ranger Boat and Mercury motor) and Louise Mikell, 82, of Prentiss, won the Lincoln Navigator raffle.
